Best Halloween Movies?

So...my husband and I inadvertently watched the premiere of Season 2 of The Walking Dead.

I don't get it.

I mean...I get it...it's a show about zombies.

But I don't get why they made it into a show. I mean haven't we seen that movie? Like A MILLION times?

Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good zombie movie and they are kind of hard to find.

I mean good ones.

Honestly, I think the best zombie movie is Shaun of the Dead but I'm weird like that.

Then I started to think about great scary movies for Halloween.

When I was growing up *mumble* years ago the best scary movies were the ones where you didn't get to see much.

It was all about suspense.

Now its all about the gore factor and they rely too heavily on computer and special effects.

And where's the damn storyline? I mean I don't care if the girl in the pajamas dies or the guy in the woods gets gutted because they haven't given me any story to care about them.

Now when I watch movies I spend all my time saying, "If she carried a firearm that would never have happened."

When I think of scary movies I think of Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Omen, Salem's Lot and Alien. Just to name a few.

So? What do you guys think of when you think of scary movies?

And...what kind of candy are you handing out this year? I'll keep my traveling options open!

  1. Haven't seen Walking Dead, but I know many, many people were tuning in to watch it. I really don't like scary movies, but I've seen most of the older ones you mentioned. I'll take suspense over gore any day.

  2. If you haven't watched the series from the beginning of season 1, then I can see why you might be having trouble.

The series is extremely character driven, but you have to be there from the outset to know who they are for you to care about them.

We don't get the network it's on here in Canada so I will be waiting for the dvd.

  3. The Walking Dead is more about human survival than zombies.
Nightmare on Elm Street is a perfect example. The Exorcist as well. (It's just been copied a million times since then.) More recently, I'd say The Ring was high on the creep factor with virtually no gore.
And Shaun of the Dead was excellent. Zombieland just beats it for me though!

  4. I'm terrified of exorcism movies. I don't know why... I was raised Catholic, but I'm a far cry from Catholic these days. Still, The Exorcist and The Exorcism of Emily Rose scare the bejesus out of me (no pun intended).

Jacob's Ladder is my favorite American psychological horror movie.. mostly because my favorite horror video game bases a lot of their visuals off it, and it is TRULY terrifying.

Let The Right One In is scary in its own way, too. The original Swedish one is creepy and suspenseful. The American is too gorerific.

  5. Poltergeist, Candyman, Alien, The Thing. Suspense over gore any day. I'm handing out Reese's DARK peanut butter cups and free frosty coupons from Wendy's. I've got like 50 cause I can't say no to the adoption charity.

  7. L.G. - I'm with you. Gore has its place but not to replace scary.

Wendy - Hi! I'm not sure we are going to go back to season 1. Have to wait and see if we run out of things to watch. Thanks for coming by!

Alex - I haven't seen Zombieland but it has been on my list. Perhaps I should move it up!

Renee - I'm not familiar with Jacob's Ladder. I will have to check it out.

Marcfdvd - Since you live closest to me I might have to sneak over!

Tara - Good point. Lots of movies missing crucial story components.

  8. Scary movies-
*Bambi for one, the mother dying , the big fire, can't watch it.
*Dumbo- the mother dying, I think there was a fire, bad influences on Dumbo, can't watch it.
*Pinocchio, bad influences on him, can't watch it.
*And then there's Hansel and Gretel- witch in the woods is bad enough, but then there is the evil step mother. Abandonment and step mothers are very scary themes. Don't even have to get to zombies.
    * How about The Little Match Girl- freezing to death in the snow.
Children's Classic Literature is the scariest of all to me, but, then my children didn't let me go see Exorcist, Elm Street, Chucky, Halloween.
