#IWSG - February is here and we're cold and then hot and then cold!

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

The awesome co-hosts for the February 6 posting of the IWSG are Raimey Gallant, Natalie Aguirre, CV Grehan, and Michelle Wallace!

February 6 optional question - Besides writing what other creative outlets do you have?

Hello there, nice blog people! (and occasional bot!)

It's February and the temps in NY this week are bouncing all over the thermometer! This morning it's below freezing, but yesterday afternoon we had a high of 60-somthing and I had the windows open in the car!
Mother Nature is keeping us on our toes.

I have nothing good to report on the writing front. On my latest story I've had 16 rejections, 2 no-responses, and 1 recent submission that's waiting a reply. That list is a mix of agents and publishers.

The rejections are all similar....thank you for the opportunity to read your work, it doesn't fit with what we're doing at the present, this is just one person's opinion, have a great day.

If I had the money to self-publish, I would consider it, but after you get so many rejections you have to start wondering if it's what you're sending out that sucks and not just the responses.

So...on that depressing note...I'm going to share a few funny pics, and some other IWSG info, and keep moving forward!
Thanks for listening.

  1. I've read your work. It's not you. Just the timing. Don't give up!

  2. I agree with Alex. That story will find its home yet!

  3. I love your fortitude to keep forging ahead. I also agree with Alex. It will happen. <3

  4. I feel your pain. I've decided to take a break from querying because the rejection was killing my creative drive and I couldn't move forward with my new novel.

    1. So much this. I haven't written in forever.
      Best wishes to you!

  5. Well, at least I know my rejections are in line with what other publishers and agents say. LOL

The business really is subjective, Heather. Keep trying.

    1. I know, you're right. It just stings with so many in a row.

  6. Knowing that rejection is part of this business doesn't make receiving them any easier. With every 'no' you're a step closer to the 'yes.'

  7. You certainly haven't gone into a field of warm-welcoming embraces. I know that for sure. A lot of writing success is determination with a large dose of good timing. Don't stop.

  8. I garden, bake and take photos – they're all kind of creative?

  9. It's not you. Remember all the best sellers out there and the list of rejections they got before finally getting that yes.

    1. It's true. It's just tough to swallow.
      Thank you, Patricia!

  10. I know how you feel. I don't have money to self-publish, and I keep getting rejections for the first in a series I hope to get an agent/publisher for. Those rejections are one of the things, the main thing, that can activate my depression, but I keep on going.

  11. Well, your work doesn't suck. I'm sorry about the onslaught of rejections. It's a hard road to travel. Hang in there—because your work really doesn't suck!

That body count pic makes me laugh every time I see it. As does the Jack Sparrow response. It really is the way we should all deal with bad reviews.

  12. Heather - I outgrew that "rejection dejection" after the first three rejections. As a retirement project I have self-published 20 books so far. They are not literature, just the stories I wanted to tell and see in print. Using Create Space, and now KDP, I have never spent more that $40 for the five finished paperbacks I want for the family. Anything Amazon sells from my Author's Page is gravy to me.

    1. Great job on all your success. I know it can be pricey to get an editor and I need one. :)
Best of luck in all you do!

The weather is all over here in Philadelphia too. Not looking forward to the return of serious cold next week.

  15. Those are great pics! I especially love the Jack Sparrow one. :D

Sorry to hear about the rejections, but I read an article recently (wish I could find the link) whose author made rejections the goal. 100 rejections by the end of the year. It made the process almost enjoyable. Not sure it would work for you, but still, I thought I'd share.

    Good luck!

  16. I know exactly how you feel. Don't give up! Thank you for sharing.

  17. Rejection is tough. One thing to remember. It's not you they are rejecting, it's your work. Imagine an actor. That rejection is personal. They are rejecting the person. Yikes! Have your pity party (we all need that time) then back to work. Stay warm and good luck.

  18. I have asked myself that same question several times. So, I keep studying the craft, just in case. I mean, giving up isn't an option, but I am willing to learn.

Those are some funny funnies. Love it!!

  19. Hey, don't let that negative voice in your head tell you nonsense! Until that moment that you've gotten a hundred rejections on the same story from different outlets, it's not you -- it's them :-)

  20. Buahahaha! Your "Body Count" meme has me busting out! Thanks for the tearful laugh! I love the memes. I'm sorry to hear about the rejections. No replies are the worst! There has to be a way to get your stuff out there. What can we do? ((HUGS))

  21. Sorry to hear, my friend. Hang in there.

One thing that really helped take the sting out of rejection for me is pushing myself to submit my work 100 times every year. Then it's the submitting that becomes the win, not the acceptance, and after a while, rejections aren't taken so seriously.

  22. Hi Heather - things will turn around ... it's just keeping going; and getting some new work ready and then submitted ... but good luck - I can reliably tell you that 28 days went no where with me! Cheers ... all the best - Hilary
