Adventure - Inside-Out

We all need a little adventure in our lives!

When I was a kid eons ago, I loved to go to the pond and discover. With friends, we would play family or castle or school or making movies. I was pretty bossy (still am) so I was usually in charge and chose my part first. I was the baby, the princess, the teacher, the director. I'm surprised my friends stayed friends with me! But we always had a blast. And I think most kids (like my boys) start outside and have just as much fun as we did in the day. We just need to keep limiting the screens while we can, because...
Inevitably, kids turn into teenagers. Ugh! The adventure goes Inside for a while (until they can drive--yikes!) True then as it is today, just a little more technology. Teens find adventure in video games, movies, YouTube, and social media. As generations change, I've found kids and teens are basically the same, even though we have a danger of becoming addicts to our phones, this is how life is now.
The Key to Great Adventure Inside or Out is taking risks, but being smart about it. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. If we limit the kids and teach teens to set their own limits, hopefully we'll all be successful adventurous adults!
One last thing: In awesome news, I heard books are making a comeback! We authors need to keep writing and inspiring kids, teens, and adults. Books are the best Inside Adventure for all because it exercises your brain which keeps you young. Just make sure to get some physical exercise once in a while too!

Great post, Tara! I agree it's so important that kids get outside and stretch their imagination, as well as through reading. It seems that the tech becomes part of life younger than ever - my 11-year-old already makes and edits her own YouTube videos, but on the plus side, that's something creative. She's a bookworm, too (currently devouring Harry Potter). I think there's hope yet!

ReplyDeleteIronically, I never did much of the outside stuff when I was little. I hated bugs and dirt. I'm outdoors more now than I ever was as a child.
it’s funny how things change! like veggies... didn’t like them then, well that didn’t really change (hahaha)
DeleteI was guilty of that. Went from playing out in the dirt with my cars and animals to playing video games inside.

DeleteAs a kid, I did the same thing. Made up stories and handed out the parts. It was a blast and the kids all went along with it. Bossy, yeah, definitely a word attached to me. LOL

DeleteSpent a lot of time as a kid running around our neighborhood with the kids who lived across the street, playing whatever scenarios we can up with. We tended to take turns deciding, though. When it was my turn to pick, it was always some kind Robin Hood sort of thing. :)

Childhood is a lot different now than it was for me. There was no computer or video games, and we were not allowed to sit around watching television all day. But life wasn't all pleasure cruises and rose gardens. Each generation has its own positives and negatives. It's important to foster creativity in the reality of the day.

DeleteI often wish I could do more with my kids than I'm able to. My friends will tell me about this trip or that trip they took their kids on, and I'm despairing because I'm struggling to save up enough time off to just cover all the times my son gets sent home from school. Hopefully my kids will be able to build happy memories even though we don't leave the house much.

Great post! Love the photo too. I have a similar one with my two young daughters and their two girl cousins in underwear in a kiddie pool. They all hate the photo but it makes me smile every time I look at it, not because of what they were wearing, but raising a kid wasn't so complicated. I also loved being a mommy.
