#IWSG - March - I've got an Insecure Tip and my book is just 99 cents!!!

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time - and return comments. This group is all about connecting!

Our Twitter handle is @TheIWSG and hashtag is #IWSG.
Optional March 4 question - Other than the obvious holiday traditions, have you ever included any personal or family traditions/customs in your stories?

The awesome co-hosts for the March 4 posting of the IWSG are Jacqui Murray, Lisa Buie-Collard, Sarah Foster, Natalie Aguirre, and Shannon Lawrence!

IWSG Instagram schedule for March:

Happy March everyone! It's already pretend Spring here in NY! I swear I heard peepers last night and we're wearing sweatshirts! Either a big, bad storm is coming to kick our butts or we really will get an early Spring!

Here's a tip that helps me not be so insecure: Someone mentioned on the FB group that they lost a large portion of their WIP and their back-up plan failed.
I've started to email myself a copy of my work to my gmail. That way if my computer has issues, I can still get to my stuff from another computer.
Got any tips to share?

  1. Heather!
Back up every day to an external and then put the essentials on another computer as well.

    1. I wish I was that organized, but I'm just not. I should be.
      TY!

  2. I learnt the hard way about backing up years ago. I'm now a paranoid writer. I work off a USB stick, but have copies of this that are regularly updating on both work laptops (I have 2), my own persanal one, plus email. I also save the work sent by critique partners and have helped them out once or twice after they lost their own work.

  3. I pay $99/year for Carbonite. It has saved me two times so far because it automatically backs up all my files. The support is fabulous. You get a real person and they actually help you if you have problems.

  4. What a smart idea. I use dropbox, but emailing sounds pretty simple.

  5. Back up of course! I keep a hard disk handy. And mail to myself too. And I have a husband who is good at recovering stuff sometimes! So yes, you must get a place with all back up!

    1. That's pretty comforting having the husband help out!

  6. That sounds like a good plan to me. I've lost files on my computer before. Honestly, if those files were ever in an email, it can be easier to find that email then go hunting for the lost file on my hard drive.

  7. I have an external drive I don't remember to update nearly often enough - doing it as soon as I'm done here!
I use Dropbox but Scrivener/Mac won't sync with it so I have to do it manually as well ... so it doesn't happen often enough either :)
Hope lots of people pick up the book - it's fantastic!!

    1. Dropbox seems to be popular. I think my Dad sends me stuff on that!
      Thank you!

  8. That reminds me, I need to update my back ups on my thumb drives again. Thanks.

  9. My blood just ran cold, thinking about my backup plan failing. Which is currently Dropbox. I just purchased an external drive, so I'll soon have writing files backed up on that, too.

  10. I back up on an external hard drive and a thumb drive. I've been thinking about using Dropbox, as well, as I no longer save to my computer anymore. My friend Elaine has used the email system for some years, having had a colossal failure once.

  11. Everything I write I initially save to a flash drive, then back that up on my laptop, then upload everything to OneDrive. I think it's a good idea to keep everything somewhere like email/cloud so you can access it no matter what happens to your computer or physical drives.

  12. Love your enthusiasm here, Heather! Sounds like you're doing amazing! Yeah, I email a copy to myself at more than one email, save on a flash drive, and then my external drive. I know it's probably overkill, but I've lost material in the past, and that was way too painful.

  13. I back up everything on an external and take it with me everywhere I go. As a publisher, I can't afford to lose anything. It even goes to TSO concerts with me. LOL

  14. That's an idea I hadn't thought of before! Like many others here have mentioned, I use an external drive. There's very little on my computer's drive these days. ;)
