#IWSG - October is here whether we're ready or not. :)

 The Insecure Writer’s Support Group

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Our Twitter is @TheIWSG and hashtag #IWSG.

October 7 optional question - When you think of the term working writer, what does that look like to you? What do you think it is supposed to look like? Do you see yourself as a working writer or aspiring or hobbyist, and if latter two, what does that look like?

The awesome co-hosts for the October 7 posting of the IWSG are Jemima Pett, Beth Camp, Beverly Stowe McClure, and Gwen Gardner!

Hello and Happy October!
Like so many of you, I'm not writing / publishing / marketing anything. The current country/world situation(s) dominates every moment of our day. It's hard to focus. It's hard to write. It's hard to find the zone. It's hard to do anything.

For the month of September, I joined a free accountability challenge, with about 300 writers, run by a professional editor. (By the end of the month there were less than 100 writers.) It was a really great way to kick-start my writing again.

The challenge began by choosing a goal and then you would be accountable to yourself, a small group of writers in the same boat as you, and the editor.

My goal was to work on a new genre for the first half of the month and if I didn't like where that was going I would switch and work on my original Rock 'n Roll Romance MS.

The new genre was a bust, so I'm working on my old MS. It's a good story, just poorly written. It's a very slow process, and I have to take some time between edits to decompress, but I'm determined to get this stupid thing re-written.

I must remind myself that I'm an author and I need to get back to doing what I love to do, even if it makes me drink booze and eat chocolate!

I hope you guys are doing what you love! And staying safe. And wearing a mask.

And now...for the funnies...

  1. Well done for even attempting an accountability challenge! I'm having trouble turning out even half-decent short stories at present (as my WEP will show) But, we soldier on.
    Love those funnies!

  3. Sounds like a good challenge you entered. Anything to get the juices flowing, and hopefully it continues on. NaNo is just around the corner too - planning to take part?

    1. I don't do well with NaNo. I don't like being told what to do each day. :)

  5. I love that one about committing perjury. (OMG. It just took me so many tries to spell 'perjury' correctly.)

So glad the accountability challenge worked out for you!!

  9. LOL ~ I am drinking booze and eating chocolate, Heather. And, yes, it is hard to focus. I'm glad that you found something effective to motivate you. Wishing you lots of writing success as we head into October.

  10. I'd love to learn more about the accountability challenge you joined. I think I need that! Is it still going on? Is it open to new people?

  12. I have an accountability partner, and our weekly check-in sessions definitely keep me on track. We've both remarked that knowing we have to share our progress or lack thereof with the other at the end of the week can be a powerful motivator. It has been hard to stay on track and keep focus this year, especially these past few weeks. I'm glad you found a group that helped you make your way through the noise of this year!
