I put the normal in paranormal.

I haven't written very much in Caine's story lately but the other day I opened it up and started reading over from the beginning.

I do that a lot.

Then I realize that even though I am trying to write a supernatural-esque or paranormal-ish story I have left those elements out.

Whoops.

There is a lot of important information that I am leaving out. Terms. Abilities. Senses. Feelings. Physical reactions.

I guess I will need to do some research.

Ha!

In other words, an excuse for not writing.

But really. I know there are a ton of werewolf stories out there. But I don't want to just regurgitate what others have written before.

"You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility... for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could..." Dr. Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel either.

There is something to be said for simple. I don't want to confuse myself or anyone who might read the story. But I also want to weave a believable tale.

Are you buying any of this?

I think I need to make a list. Did I mention that I like to make lists? I have never made one for writing but I make lists for about everything else in my life.

First some research, then make a list for this story so that I can remember to add important details.

On an unrelated note...

So, there is a new tab at the top of my page. I have posted an excerpt of my completed book Setting the Record Straight. If there are enough interested parties I will post some more.

  1. I'm buying... But I'll also say that all of that gets together once you've done a rough draft.

Planning to death can be a form of procrastination too...

    Good luck either way!

  2. I'm buying it too, and I agree with Misha-when I do revisions that's where a lot of details, description, and so on comes in for me.

    I'm also a list maker. :)

  3. Misha - Thanks. I don't want to plan so much as I think I need to remember I'm not writing about humans. But your right, getting the rough draft down is important. Thanks for stopping in.

Kimberly - Good point. I just have to relate that a werewolf would react differently to some things than a human would. Thanks.

    Yeah for lists!

  4. I think that's where I find character lists helpful--something to keep track of people in the stories, their traits, likes, dislikes, etc. I'm not very good about outlining stories but I do make character lists.

  6. I love your title! If you're looking for research material, the True Blood series (books, not tv) has werewolves in them, or a type of changling animals. There is good description of their culture and rituals. If you're interested....

I'm still convinced you need a separate room where you can escape everything else and just write. You have too many distractions. I saw a pic of a writer's haven in a mag once - I'll see if I can find it. I always wanted to make it for you.

  7. Liz - List makers unite is right! It's a sickness. I have an app on my phone for lists now. So sad.
    (Dyslexics untie!)
I've never made a character list either but that does sound efficient.

Katie - Too funny. I'm sure Ms. Harris's werewolves are cool but they are hers.

I think I will go old school and look up classic werewolves and actual wolves to get some info.

I think about moving somewhere else in the house to write. I was at the dining room table for a while but that sucked. A writer's haven sounds nice but I don't know what mine would look like or where it would be.

If we win that HGTV house in Vermont I'm sure I could find a place to write there!

  8. So, why can't we just go from the dream (I wanna' be a writer) to the reward (I am published, rich an' famouse, in one swell foop), in one easy leap? That would be so much more fun, don'tcha' think?

  9. Yaya - Yes. It certainly would be more fun! I guess I don't mind playing their game but they have to stop changing the rules!
Such is life. Thanks for coming!
