Pop quiz! #IWSG

Created and Developed by: Alex J. Cavanaugh

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Just for fun.

Pop quiz, hot shot.

Does this picture fill you with dread OR fill you with hope and excitement?

What about this one?

Do you break out in a sweat OR do you rub your hands together with glee?

What about your edits?

Thrilling OR terrifying?

When the end is near?

Scared to death OR giddy with delight?

One last question.

Acute sense of accomplishment OR profound sense of loss?

The blank page is tough. So is completing the first draft.
Revisions - now I like those.

  2. Unfortunately, all of it scares me and floods me with delight at the same time. I'm never sure how to describe my feelings about the blank page or writing The End.

  3. Starting a new story is always exciting for me. It's some time in the middle of it that I need to force myself to focus. I could start new mss every day. Lol.

  4. If I've got plot notes, empty pages don't bother me. I get excited, even though I know I have a long road ahead.

And 'the end' gets me excited, too. That means it's time to do a full read-through--my favorite part! :)

    Great post.
IWSG #215 until Alex culls the list again.

  5. The blank space is a bit daunting so I throw some words on there as fast as I can. It looks better and at least then there's something to work with!

As for the rest of your questions - I feel all of those, wrapped up in a maelstrom of emotion. There's nothing quite like it!

  6. The blank page is scary, but I love edits. And "the end" is the absolute best, even it's only the end of a first draft and I know I'll be adding more.

  7. I have an old story I need to revise and that's scaring me at the moment.

  8. I do like the blank page. All that possibility is exciting. 'The End' is a rush. Editing is...well, I have a love/hate relationship with editing. It's a tedious affair, but I love what it ultimately does for my WIPs.

  9. The Speed reference just cracked me up. I think I mostly find the blank page terrifying. But once I actually get going, it fills up pretty quickly.

  10. Can I just say, "all of the above." ? lol

  11. I like the blank page and blank screen; they don't bother me too much. Most of the time I have ideas to start with. Editing/revising, eh, not so much. I like when I'm at the end of a story because I get this great feeling of accomplishment.

Great post. Have a fabulous day! Eva

  13. It depends on my mood that day! Sounds hokey I know, but it is true. A blank sheet of paper or a blank screen can send shivers of anticipation up my spine, or can make me run to clean my kitchen. With edits most of the time I'm ready to go. It's hard and I hate it, but it must be done if I want to see the end result, which I do. And at the end I'm usually ready to see that baby fly! Love it to death and want everyone else to love it too! Right now I'm confused, frustrated and terrified that my current wip, which I have been over so many times my fingers are bleeding, still isn't right and I'm horrified that I might not ever find out who my character really is, what really motivates him, and will I ever be able to make him real if he won't talk to me?! I wish I could be like Captain Picard and say, "Make it so, Number One" and that would be all there was to it!

  14. The big stack scares me, lol. The other intrigues me. It all depends on the day too. It is only a loss if I do not write, and then I beat myself up. Lucky for me that does not happen often anymore. Story craft is fascinating.

  15. I know it is just pictures, but you had me squirming all the way through. I used to be a lot tougher.

  17. All illicit a certain joy and dread at any given moment in my writing life.

  18. I'm nearing the finish line and I'm giddy with excitement for sure! Hopefully my ego's not writing checks my body can't cash. ;-)

  19. I've always loved paper and pens - have so many notepads and writing tools it's bordering on extreme hoarders! As for the writing, love it all in the right mood, hate it in the wrong mood!

  20. so extreme!
the notebook one i like, but the angle makes it look intimidating - did you do that on purpose? hmm?
and editing - that's what it feels like to me - an endless stack of fixits, very daunting!

hope things are going well for ya!

  21. I have an outline before I start, but I often find it really hard to figure out the first scene!

  22. Okay:

Blank pages in books intimidate me far less than on a computer.

I love edits. So I find them thrilling.

At the end, I tend to have this feeling of separation anxiety, followed by the huge sense of accomplishment once the project is finished. :-D

  23. Right now it's fear that keeps my screen blank, but I hope this month to fix this. Thanks for the encouragement!

  24. Diggin' all these pics! The first pic, of the notebook, I liked a lot, because that's how I typically write (I type up later for a 2nd draft and edits and whatnot). The blank Word doc sheet, gah! ::shudders:: For me, that comes off more terrifying, more FINAL - which is silly, really, as nothing's really final till you say it is, right? I will say that I have tried writing a first draft of a thing electronically first, and it was kind of like dropping a canoe into a raging river, hopping in, and holding on for dear life. So, kinda cool. :-)
