Top 10 Things to be Learned from a Lifetime of Soap Watching

I grew up on soap operas. One of my first memories is watching "Days of Our Lives" with my grandma. Now, you may think this sounds silly, but I learned a lot about life watching the soaps.

1. DNA test your baby.
2. Don't lie. It always, always leads to trouble.
3. Don't leave your sister with your husband.
4. Don't leave your best friend with your husband.
5. Wear high heels to the grocery store.
6. All doctors, cops, teachers, lawyers, etc. are hot.
7. You'll know the bad guy by the arch of his/her brow.
8.  Don't go near steps when pregnant. They are the #1 cause of miscarriage.
9. Fake amnesia. It's more dramatic than declaring the 5th (that's the 5th Amendment in the US...the right to remain silent.)
10. Don't ask for too much money or be hard to work with or that voice over guy may be announcing that your role is now being filled by another actor.

Jo Leigh Harper comes from a long line of trouble-making, white trash stock.
Tanner Coulter comes from a longer line of wealth-creating, blue blood stock.
Jo graduated college top of her class, moving toward a future full of possibilities.
Tanner dropped out of college, trading a law degree for drinking games and one night stands.

A family crisis throws the rich party boy and the poor genius girl together. The attraction is immediate, though neither one is a heart-in-the-sand-drawing believer in true love. But as the summer sun heats up along the shores of the Outer Banks, so does the connection between them. Maybe, just maybe, they can win at love by defying reason.

Elizabeth is a multi-published author of books for people who are believers in happily-ever- after, true love, and stories with a bit of fun and twists with their plots. The mother of four young men, she tackles laundry daily and is the keeper of the kitchen. She lives along the shores of the Ohio River in West Virginia, but dreams daily of the beach.

  1. LOL I LOVE this! I'm streaming Melrose Place (season 4) while I'm typing this. The show was great at first but I remember why I stopped watching it now. I lost patience with the lack of believability with soaps as I got older. In the 70s and 80s, when I was a kid and didn't know better, they seemed great. I was a HUGE Days of Our Lives fan in the 80s. Perhaps we had to see what bad writing was to understand and appreciate good writing! Still...Melrose Place had its moments, even in the bad seasons! (Brooke as a ghost...creepy!)

    1. Oh my goodness...were you watching when Marlena was possessed by demons? I suppose to be a writer, we first have to learn to suspend all logic to set the imagination free. That's my story. I'm sticking with it.

  2. LOL I used to love the soaps! These are all perfect. I remember watching Days of Our Lives in my dorm when I was in college - we all watched and it was so much fun.

    1. Group watching was the best. Oh, I do miss girl friends gathering to soaps. Such fun!

  3. My mom watched soaps all the time. Everybody cheats, so basically, just lock up your spouse.

    1. LOL. Yep. On soaps, relationships are best marked in months rather than years.

  4. I used to watch All My Children. A lot of the villains had bad Southern accents.

    1. Probably because no one knows passive aggressive like those smooth talking southerners.

  6. LOL!! This really made me giggle!! I remember watching Days of Our Lives when I was a kid too... we managed to get it on satellite over here in Portugal for a while, but before that I had to make do with Brazilian soap operas. Now, if you think US soap operas are bad... you ain't seen nothing until you've seen a Brazilian one!!

    1. I watched a few on the Spanish channel. Even not understanding the language, I could follow the plot.

  7. My mother always watched soaps but I never did except as I pass through the living room. It seemed everyone was a doctor or a lawyer. And in the early years, none of the women worked or were professionals. Amusing list.

    1. That is another truth I missed. They are all doctors and lawyers. By the time I was in high school, all the women were doctors and lawyers too. And they were all educated in one season.

  8. I've watched soaps on and off over the years and no matter how long I'm away from them, when I come back it doesn't take long to get right back in the groove. I loved hearing what you learned from them, especially 1, 2, 6 and 9, well, really all of them are good!

    1. Isn't that the truth? I can watch days once every five years and know exactly what's up in minutes. It's comforting.

  10. Thank you all for coming to visit with Elizabeth!
I wasn't much for the soaps except the movie Soap. Now that was awesome. Sally Field. Whoopie Goldberg. Robert Downey, Jr. Kevin Kline! So funny!

    1. I need to re-watch that. Didn't they make that into a tv show too?

  11. I was always into the CBS soaps. My favorite was Guiding Light for many years, but after the cruel way they gave the boot to Michael Zaslow (Roger) when he was sick, I got more into As the World Turns. I'm totally not ashamed to admit all those years of devotedly watching soaps taught me a lot of important lessons about how to craft and sustain a multigenerational town/family saga with lots of characters and storylines.

  12. Haha...Don't leave anyone with the husband, or with his long lost twin who supposedly died but suddenly reappeared and fakes amnesia and falls in love with the housekeeper who is actually your birth sister but raised by an adoptive family on a faraway isle...So sorry. I grew up on General Hospital.

Thank you both. This was fun.

  13. I remember watching Ryan's Hope when it first started. It was awesome. I think we made it almost three weeks before they started using flashback scenes!

Have you ever noticed that if you're channel surfing and hit a soap, you know right away - before anyone says a word - that it's a soap?

    1. You're right. I think they may all use the same set, so we immediately recognize it.
