#IWSG - November -- Maybe I'll brush the cat.

Alex J. Cavanaugh

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

His awesome co-hosts for today are Stephen Tremp, Karen Walker, Denise Covey, and Tyrean Martinson!

I was trying to come up with something stunning for today's post. So, I went to peel and slice apples to make applesauce.

Now, the apples are in the crock pot and I still don't have anything specific to let you know or even to complain about.

I'm thinking of folding the laundry.

This is what I do.

Avoidance.

It's my go-to when I can't write.

You know I've got it bad if I leave my keyboard to wash the dishes.

Sometimes I wish I had an angry German standing behind me forcing me to get my writing done.

(I only use 'angry German' in the most loving interpretation because that's half my family tree.)

Point is, we all need to get back to work. It might be painful. It might be a struggle. It might even make you nauseous.

Maybe I'll brush the cat.

Nein
It's the only way to get the words on paper.

  1. Try washing the cat instead. That will cure you!

  2. LOL Alex is right!

I'll trade you. I want to write, but can't. Life is getting in the way!

  3. I think breaks are important. Cats are even more important that breaks. So brush your cat without guilt.

  4. Oh you know it's bad when your doing house chores.... I read stories and books whenever I'm stuck in a rut. Something about reading other people's work makes me think, "Hey, I need to get some of this done too!"

  5. Washing the cat - LOL! Rocko would tear me to pieces if I tried.

  6. I love that your avoidance doesn't rhyme with FB or Twitter. Good choices!

  7. "You know I've got it bad if I leave my keyboard to wash the dishes." Ha! Same here. :P

  8. Suppose I told you that your are not allowed to write for the next few days. I'd bet my pension that you'd grab hold of that keyboard and slam the door in my face, :)

  9. I've been struggling to write lately, and I do the same thing: avoid! avoid! avoid! Suddenly everything else is SO important, I can't possibly take the time to sit and write! Chores I resent are all at once my favorite pastimes . . .

  10. Hey, look on the bright side--washing dishes (or that cat) gets your body moving. You have to get up from the computer regularly for good health, so it's all good! Actually, I deliberately use household chores as writing breaks, though I can also use them to avoid writing (my house has NEVER been as clean as when I was [supposed to be] writing my dissertation!

  11. We brushed the cat the other day. We had put it off way too long, his fur was full of knots. :-(

What I'm saying is, don't put off brushing your cat. Or your writing. Both are important.

  12. I always use the dishes as a distraction from what I should actually be doing. Actually, my cat could probably use a brushing, too...

  13. Oh my gosh! I know what you mean about the things we do to avoid other things! Sometimes I am most productive around here when I am avoiding something...that almost makes sense!

  14. When I had my cat I had to give it two shots of insulin a day as she was diabetic.
Something different to do with a cat.

  16. Hahahah just the other day I had the same thought when I opted for doing dishes over the laptop!

  17. Yep, we all have our tools of procrastination. But like you said, butt in chair! Just gotta do it.

  18. Oh, you had plenty of specifics to say. I could smell the apples cooking!

  19. I don't have any angry Germans but my daughter has a clown costume that works for me ;-)

  20. I love making applesauce! I'm a terrible procrastinator. Like right now. I promised myself I'd get up this morning and hit my wip. Instead, I'm visiting friends. Heather I just started reading Already Home and really liking it!!!!

  21. Homemade applesauce sounds great. At least you are getting chores done. I tend to do stupid stuff when I'm killing time and avoiding writing. Now if you say you are going to walk the cat - that's when the official crazy kicks in. Good luck!

  22. Mach Schnell!!!! Did that help any? lol Yeah avoidance and procrastination a writers everlasting henchmen.

  23. Such a spot-on analysis of what we do when not wanting to do the work. At least for me anyway! And it is hard work some days. But instead of brushing the cat, I really need to give the dog a bath. ;)

  24. I'm very familiar with "avoidance" - suddenly, the overgrown garden needs weeding! And yet, once you get started writing, it's bliss :-)
