Gnomes Galore!

I don't know what's happening on my porch, but the gnomes are multiplying...again.

***

Stormy the Weather Gnome: What the...? Who's this guy?

Gnameless Gnome: Hello. I'm new here. I've been inside since the end of September. I'm a birthday gnome.

StWG: Now we have too many players for our Quidditch team.

StWG: Well, even though you're a gnome, you can't stay out here with us.

Gnameless Gnome: Why not? I want to hang with my gnomies.

StWG: No can do. You have to go back inside.
You're too ... soft.

Gnameless Gnome: Back inside? But, who will be my friend?

Hamish: Stick with me, little fuzzy felt guy, I'm kind of a big deal around here.

Feel free to suggest names for the new guy!

If I were a Mobster BlogFest with Chrys Fey!

If I were a Mobster Blogfest...
Thank you, Chrys!
This was a lot of fun! Best of luck to you!

From Chrys Fey:

Prompt: If I were a Mobster…
When? October 21st, 2016
*If you need to, you can post the day after.
Where? On your blog!
Post Ideas: I’m giving you creative freedom to create anything that comes to mind for the prompt: If I were a Mobster. You can share a poem or flash fiction piece about what you imagine yourself doing if you were a mobster.
Or share a detailed profile of your mobster self. This is what I’ll be doing.
Here’s an example of a mobster profile you can fill out:
My Mobster Name:
My Rank: (leader or minion)
Crime Zone: (city/state)
My Look/Disguise:
Weapon of Choice:
Mobster Vehicle:
What I’m Known For:
My Catch Phrase:
The Name of my Mob Leader:

You have complete freedom with the profile. Take out or add in. You can even turn the profile into a descriptive paragraph. Get creative with it. For mine, I used what I'm known for to create a clever profile.

I really just want everyone to have fun with this. Become someone new for one day in the blogosphere. Get in touch with your bad side. ;)

My mobster vision...

My Mobster Name: The House-Wife.

My Rank: Hit Woman.

Crime Zone: Just outside the city.

My Look: IF you saw me, you'd only think I was a soccer mom, doing a few errands before the PTA meeting.

Weapon of Choice: I like to be flexible, and depending on the situation, use what's available to me. I can kill you with a cup of coffee if I have to. No, really.

Mobster Vehicle: I drive a non-descript beige mini-van.

What I’m Known For: It always looks like an accident.

My Catch Phrase: Let's make this quick.

Name of my Mob Leader: If I told you, I'd have to kill you.

Don't Fall by Rachel Schieffelbein

Welcome and congratulations to Rachel Schieffelbein! Check out her gorgeous book cover and below where she talks about her Top Ten Fairy Tale list!

Top Ten List

Top Ten Fairy Tales:

10. The Little Mermaid. The original story is much different from the Disney one, and I enjoy them both. The mermaid’s motivation for becoming human in the original story is quite interesting.

9. Sleeping Beauty. I love the Disney version of this one. Merriweather was always my favorite fairy. Plus I love Prince Philip.

8. Thumbelina. If you’ve never seen the animated version of this, you should. It’s wonderful.

7. The Six Swans. I love the princess in this story. She’s brave and selfless. And I kind of love that it’s a girl saving all her brothers.

6. Snow White and Rose Red. This is another one I’d love to do a retelling of some day. Not a lot of people are familiar with the story.

5. Cinderella. There are so many wonderful retellings of Cinderella, it’s hard to pick a favorite.

4. The Twelve Dancing Princesses. I’ve always found this one fascinating. The whole underground world the princesses visit, it’s so dark and mysterious.

3. Snow White. I’d love to write a version of this story completely from the Evil Queen’s perspective.

2. Beauty and the Beast, especially the Disney version. Belle IS the best Disney princess.

1. Rapunzel. I remember having this read to me as a young child and it’s one that just stayed close to my heart. That’s why I wanted to do a contemporary retelling of it.

Rachel grew up in a tiny town in Minnesota. She still lives there with her husband, their four kids, three cats, and a perfectly overweight black lab. She coaches high school speech and theater, rides Arabian horses, reads as much as she can, and writes stories.

Connect with the Author here:

In this modern day retelling of Rapunzel, Anya has her books, her photography, and her daydreams. She doesn’t think she needs anything else.

She lives in a house on the edge of town with her adopted mother, who goes to extreme measures to keep her daughter safe. Anya doesn’t even go to school, but instead has a private tutor. Anya tries not to acknowledge her loneliness; she puts her efforts into pleasing her mom, and gives her heart to her stories, secretly wishing for a story of her own.

Then one day at the library, the only place she's allowed to go, she takes a picture of a beautiful boy.

Before long she's lying to her mom, and sneaking out late at night to meet Zander. But Zander wants more than a secret romance. If Anya wants to be with the boy of her dreams, she will have to risk her relationship with the only other person she's ever cared about.

Bookography: like a discography, except for books.

Over the weekend, a friend asked about my books because they were slightly confused about the order of them and the availability.

I figured it can't hurt to do a blog post to help clear up any confusion that my blog friends/readers might have.

Maguire's Corner - This book is about Maggie Maguire & Jack Munro. My first published novel wasn't out in the world very long. The small publisher closed their doors and MC was no more.  It's technically book one in the MC series even though at the time I didn't know there would be more than one book to even have a series. It was available in ebook & pbk.

Already Home - This book is about Maggie Maguire & Jack Munro. This is Maguire's Corner 2.0 and it's still book one in the MC series. When it was picked up by the new publisher, they suggested we change the name so there would be less confusion searching for it online. MC got a new name, a new cover, and lots of new edits to make it even more awesome. It's available in ebook & pbk.

One Good Catch - This book is about Kate Maguire & Rhys MacGrath. This is book two in the MC series. The only confusion with this one is that it was published before Already Home/MC was re-published.
It's available in ebook & paperback.

Before We Break - This is a short story that has some of the MC characters in it. It was supposed to be included in an anthology. The now defunct publisher #FailedThisCity and I decided to self-publish it on Amazon.
It's available as an ebook for just 99 cents.

I'm currently (still) working on book three in the MC series with Bobby Maguire. Keep your fingers crossed that I finish the darn thing before I'm too old to type!

#IWSG - Yes, I'm insecure, but I'm also resilient.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance.

Need help with a topic of conversation? IWSG has a monthly question for you!
October 5 Question: When do you know your story is ready?

Alex J. Cavanaugh's awesome co-hosts for the October 5 posting of the IWSG are Beverly Stowe McClure, Megan Morgan, Viola Fury, Madeline Mora-Summonte, Angela Wooldridge, and Susan Gourley!

***
Insecure: not confident or assured; uncertain and anxious

Resilient: able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions.

***
I wrote a short story specifically for an anthology that folded like a lawn chair.
I was pissed, but at the same time really disappointed that I didn't get to share my story with my family, friends, and readers.

Of course, there were options.
-Find another anthology - submit
-Find short story magazines - submit
-Find short story contests - enter
-Offer it for free on my blog - in pieces
-Offer it for free w/ newsletter sign-up
-Try to upload it to Createspace/Amazon and sell it for 99 cents

Most of these sounded time consuming, possibly expensive, and really 'out of my comfort zone'.
But, I wanted people to read it. After all, that's why we write them!

Last week all I could think to myself was...
I can't publish it on my own. It's too hard and I've never done it. I don't know what I'm thinking. No one will want to purchase a short story for 99 cents.

Yesterday morning I woke up thinking...Why the hell not? Lots of people self-publish. I'm no different. Hell, if people will pay for dinosaur porn [yes, that's a real thing], then people will want to read my short story! Even for 99 cents!

So, I took the plunge. I went through the Kindle Direct Publishing FAQ sections and I followed all the KDP guidelines and before I even really knew it, the darn short story was up on Amazon!

My point? Was I insecure? Hells yeah, I was. But, it was either leave that short story on my computer for no one to read or try something strange, new, and different!

Our insecurities try to keep us down, but our resilience keeps us going.

It's October which means I'm almost done mowing the lawn!!

It's the little things. Really.

Well, the lawn isn't that little, but it's not like hard to mow or anything.

Basically, it's one of those chores that you have to do, and it looks great when it's done, but it's like 3 hours of your week that you just don't get back.

I should have mowed about a week ago, but it rained, so I didn't, and now it looks a little shaggy around the edges.

But, that's okay. I will only have to mow 2 or 3 more times before I can lock that sucker up in the shed and call it another year.

Of course, mowing now means that I'm mowing up all the leaves that will start falling. Luckily, the maple trees are only in the front yard. :)

First, I have to make a giant pile for The BOY to jump in.

2015

It's tradition.

Do you get to make leaf piles where you live?
