#IWSG - September IWSG Anthology Contest News!

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic.

Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh's awesome co-hosts today are C. Lee McKenzie, Rachel Pattison, Elizabeth Seckman, Stephanie Faris, Lori L MacLaughlin, and Elsie Amata!

September’s question of the month - How do you find the time to write in your busy day?

Hi!

So, since I inadvertently half-assed-answered this month's IWSG question this past Monday, I'm just going to stick with the good stuff and copy/paste the new IWSG anthology contest info right here!

Announcing the 2016 IWSG Anthology Contest!

Last year’s contest was science fiction – parallel world/alternate history, and the result was Parallels: Felix Was Here. This year, we have a new theme and invite all members to submit.

Eligibility: Any member of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group is encouraged to enter – blogging or Facebook member. The story must be previously unpublished. Entry is free.

Word count: 5000-6000

Genre: Fantasy

Theme: Hero Lost. It could be about a hero turned villain, a villain's redemption, a hero's lack of confidence, a hero's lack of smarts, etc. It can be about any kind of hero including superheroes, mythological heroes, unexpected or unlikely heroes, or a whole new kind of hero. This theme has plenty of scope and we’re open to pretty much anything along these lines. No erotica, R-rated language, or graphic violence.

Deadline: November 1st 2016

How to enter: Send your polished, formatted, previously unpublished story to admin @ insecurewriterssupportgroup.com before the deadline passes. Please include your contact details and if you are part of the Blogging or Facebook IWSG group.

Judging: The IWSG admins will create a shortlist of the best stories. The shortlist will then be sent to our official judges.

Prizes: The winning stories will be edited and published by Freedom Fox Press next year in the IWSG anthology. Authors will receive royalties on books sold, both print and eBook. The top story will have the honor of giving the anthology its title.

We’re excited to see the creativity and enthusiasm that’s such a part of this group put into action. So don your creative caps and start writing. And spread the word!

Our amazing judges this year:
Elizabeth S. Craig
Richard Harland
Laura Maisano
Russell C. Connor
Dawn Frederick
Michelle L. Johnson
Ion Newcombe
Lynn Tincher

This sounds awesome and I'm really hoping to enter this year!

What about you? Have you ever written a short story? Know anything about writing Fantasy?

  1. I've written many short stories, but I won't claim they're any good. Short stories are a particular type of artform that I really enjoy when it's done well, I just haven't figured out how to do it myself.

I know nothing about writing fantasy.

  2. Haha! I love the picture :) I've written fantasy since I first picked up a pencil and decided to try my hand at telling stories. Trust me when I say it's been a LOOOOOONG time honing writing skills AND figuring out just where oh where my fantasies belong. I'm excited to try my hands at this contest! Best of luck to everyone submitting!

  3. I am wishing you all the best if you decide to enter. I hope you do. I won't be entering because Fantasy is not my genre, but I am pulling for all who do. The judges have excellent backgrounds.
    All the best.

  7. I've never really been able to master the art of short story writing. But it's a great theme that will yield some terrific entries. Best of luck to all who submit!

  8. I've written many short stories, but since I'm not a fantasy writer at all and haven't read much of it, I'm going to bow out of this one.

  9. I'm looking forward to seeing who's included in this next anthology. I'm afraid it won't be me because I'm still sitting on the sidelines for a while. You know that old adage: Don't bite off more. . . Good luck.

  10. I tried writing short stories before, but they ended up becoming manuscripts for novels. :)
I don't have much experience with writing fantasy, though I do like reading them; I like the idea of alternate realities or other worlds in addition to Earth that could be explored.

  11. I used to write fantasy but it's been a long time! I'd really like to write something for the anthology, though!

  12. I have written a short story that was urban fantasy in nature I think. Not sure. It's about an angel and devil who sit on a human's shoulder and tries to influence them to do good or bad.

  13. Hi Heather. I have written short stories. I love them. I might think about entering too.

  14. This is going to be a great anthology and there will be stiff competition. While I love fantasy and have read a lot - my favourite author is Terry Pratchett - I haven't written any before. But I'm hoping to take on the challenge!

  15. I write lots of short stories! But they're usually horror.

  16. I was invited to re-tell a fairytale story and submit it for an anthology. Only after the anthology was published did I learn that it was an urban fantasy story. At that stage I had NO IDEA there was a sub-genre called urban fantasy. LOL
That was probably the beginning and ending of my experience in the fantasy genre.

  17. Love the Iron Man quote: very apropos to writing.

Yep, I'm entering this contest. I have written fantasy, even been published in it. Its not as easy as it seems to add magic or wizards to a story. I'm excited for this edition.
