#IWSG is on #MayThe4th Be With You Day!

The Insecure Writer’s Support Group

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Alex J. Cavanaugh's awesome co-hosts for the May 4 posting of the IWSG are Stephen Tremp, Fundy Blue, MJ Fifield, Loni Townsend, Bish Denham, Susan Gourley, and Stephanie Faris!

Instead of sharing any of my usual insecurities, I'll share some amazing news from the IWSG!

I don't recall every detail, but I do remember standing outside a theater in 1977 waiting to go see Star Wars with my parents and my two brothers.

It was larger than life.

[And we called it Star Wars. Just Star Wars.]

I'm sure I missed a lot of plot points and the general premise was probably over my head, (I was just a kid!), yet the feeling of being somewhere else, of falling into a movie and not coming back out until the credits rolled, stays with me to this day.

There was something so special about that film. The sounds, the music, the sense of urgency, the drama, the bits of humor, the sarcasm, the bond formed between the characters. It was all so ... fantastic.

Where were you when Star Wars hit theaters? Do you feel the same way I do?

I was a teen and standing in a very long line for Star Wars.

  4. Yay for the anthology!!! (And thanks for the feature.) Gosh, the original movie released before I was born, but I grew up on the Star Wars movies. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I went back and watched them and realized how cheesy they are. Oh good times...

  5. Thanks for mentioning the anthology, and May the 4th Be With You! Where was I when Star Wars hit theaters? About eight years away from being conceived. So many cool things happened before I was born. My cool movie memory from childhood was seeing Jurassic Park in the theater.

  6. I imagine I was home when Star Wars hit the theaters. (I was one.) I didn't see the movies until I was in college and had a boyfriend who liked them. Though I do appreciate the sarcasm (Of course I do), they weren't my favorites. I really did love the new one, though. I heart Rey.

  7. I'm very excited the anthology is finally out in the world.

I didn't get to see Star Wars until it had already been out 6 months. Remember the days when movies hung around in the theater for more than a month?

  8. My dad took my sister and I to see it. I was seven. Loved it. Dreamed about it. Wanted rolled up braids on my head.

  9. Hi Heather - good luck for the anthology. I took my brother to London to see it - and was exhausted ... so I fell asleep! Such is life - still can't get into them ... cheers Hilary

  10. I was only 3 when the first movie came out, but I remember sitting in a theater in my pajamas watching one of them. It could have been Empire Strikes Back, but not sure. Anyway, it's funny to see something that's become such a huge part of American life and last so long.

  11. I do! I will never forget watching The Empire Strikes Back in the theater. I created quite the stir at a huge family gathering. My relatives are Mennonites and didn't agree with the messages the movie was sending. I jumped up in my chair at the dinner table and said, well I believe in the force! My mother, I am sure, wanted to hide. Lol

  12. I must get a copy of "Parallels'. AND, thank you for explaining the 'May the 4th Be With You' Meme. I must live in a cave, because I had no clue.

  14. I am a Star Wars geek. I read everything SW. I have a collection of stuff over the years. One being Empire Strikes Back original markee poster framed and on a stand. I wanted a 3 foot Ewok, but they sold out before daddy could buy me one. They only made 3000. I still want that Ewok. I got a BB8 mobile app droid for Christmas this year in celebration of the new SW.

Where I was I at? Standing in line 9 times to see, all three each time. I have seen the new releases at their midnight showings and opening days too. I also write SW fan fiction. Now isn't that more than you ever wanted to know about me. LOL.

May the 4th Be With You 2!

  18. Very cool for the anthology. Heresy, I know, but I don't think I've ever watched the full original Star Wars from start to finish.

  19. Great to see the anthology around, congrats to all involved. I was born the year of Empire Strikes Back, 1980, and that's my fave too. I saw all the originals on the big screen on the re-releases though and it does make a difference. Must have been really exciting for you!

  20. I was born in 77, so I may or may not have been just barely alive at that time. However, when these were re-released with the sequels which shall not be named, I was working at theaters, so it was fun to see everything come back through.

  21. Saw all the originals on the big screen as part of the re-releases in the 90s. Loved it.

  22. I wasn't alive when A New Hope came out. I was just sparkle in my parents' eyes. LOL

  23. I took my son to see Star Wars when it came out. He was just a toddler. But as he got older he got the toys, the wallpaper, the sheets...LOL!

  24. I was a young mother when the movie came out. I can't count the number of times I've seen that movie and it still thrills me. (Just came back from a Disney "Star Wars Day at Sea" cruise where they showed each movie in order, culminating with Episode VII. All day they placed the soundtracks of each movie and I was transported to the theaters where I saw each one. Episode IV is still my fav. I took my kids to the movies and now they're sharing them with their kids.
